Mr. Walters is going to Washington. And he’ll be getting there on in-line skates.

Gary Walters on Wednesday announced his latest Kinship Partners challenge, in-line skating for almost a month from Brainerd to Washington, D.C., with his son, Jackson.

Gary Walters’ Kinship challenges are an effort to raise funds and awareness for Kinship Partners, the nonprofit organization that matches adult mentors with children.

In 2003, he biked from Baxter to New Orleans. In 2004, he camped out for more than a week on top of Brainerd’s historic water tower. In 2005, he walked the length of Minnesota in 17 days. In 2006, he swam across Lake Mille Lacs. In 2007, he lost 100 pounds in a year. In 2008, he unicycled around the track at Adamson Field.

A special promotion by Jamba Juice Hawaii is offering amateur surfers a chance to compete in a pro-style Waikiki surf meet, while also raising money for the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation (ODKF).

It’s all being done in conjunction with the 8th Annual Duke’s OceanFest and one of its marquee events, the Hawaiian Airlines Duke’s Legends Surf Classic, which takes place August 28-29 at Queen’s Surf in Waikiki.

Starting July 15 through August 1, a special coupon can be downloaded at jambahawaii.com and dukefoundation.org and taken to any Jamba Juice in Hawaii, where the holder will be entered into a drawing to win a spot in the Legends Surf Classic or other prizes, including a Surftech surfboard.

In addition, Jamba Juice is donating 20% from each purchase made with the coupon to ODKF’s college scholarships and athletic grants program. TV ads promoting the special are being aired for free by Oceanic Television…  Details

Dominick Rufo, 16, was in middle school when he proposed the idea of a BMX-style bike park to Turlock city officials. The plan got City Council approval in February, and Dominick is more than halfway to collecting the $10,000 in private donations needed to start the park. He needs an additional $4,500.

The park, to be built near West Christoffersen Parkway and North Walnut Road, will take about three or four months to complete once the donations are collected. Volunteers will help form the short dirt tracks and jumps.

To donate, make checks payable to the city of Turlock, with “Turlock’s BMX bike park” in the memo line, and send to City Hall, 156 S. Broadway, Turlock 95380. Donors who give more than $100 can get their name on a plaque at the park. People can pick up applications at City Hall.
