APTOS — A donation of 10 pounds of food or $10 got more than 30 kids a two hour skateboarding session at the first ever Skate-A-Thon on Saturday, a food drive for local children in need.

The event, organized by Santa Cruz nonprofit Grind Out Hunger and Rotary Interact and hosted by Twin Lakes Church, aimed to raise 10,000 pounds of food. At the end of the day, eager skateboarders raised 13,450. Over the next two months, Grind Out Hunger participants are working to raise 250,000 pounds of food through school food drives.

SurfAid’s Tom Plummer and other assessment teams spent yesterday surveying the damage in villages along the tsunami affected areas of North Pagai and South Pagai.

Villages in the area have either been completely destroyed or suffered significant damage.

The Indonesian government and a host of relief agencies scrambled to pull supplies together Wednesday before making the 12-hour journey from Sumatra to the Mentawai Islands, where more than 150 people were killed after a powerful earthquake sparked a tsunami that struck the remote region on Monday.

Two days after the 7.7-magnitude quake struck, little aid has reached the islands due to rough seas and stormy weather. The few reports trickling in have come mainly from survivors, and a few surf charters that were out on the water when the tsunami hit. But it’s surfer-supported groups, such as Last Mile Operations and SurfAid International, that have begun to provide assistance and search for the scores of villagers that remain missing.

It’s been a year since California surfer Matt George went to lend his support to the people of Padang, Indonesia after last year’s devastating 7.6 magnitude quake in October. While it has, as predicted, faded from view, George was still there Tuesday when the latest major earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit the region.
