CLEVELAND – While a local brother and sister are heading west across the country on bicycles from Rhode Island to California, another local cyclist will be heading east from California to Washington D.C.

They’re going opposite directions at roughly the same time with the same goal – raising money and awareness for their respective charities.

Come meet mountain bike pioneers such as Gary Fisher, Joe Breeze, Tom Ritchey, Ned Overend, Scot Nicol, Otis Guy, Juli Furtado, Jacquie Phelan, Charles Kelly, Ross Shafer, Steve Potts, Mark Slate, Mert Lawwill, Chris Lang, Rick Sutton and others.

There is no charge for admission, but Noah Berry, proprietor of the Broken Drum Brewery, will donate proceeds from food and drink sales to Trips for Kids.

Bike-related prizes will be raffled throughout the afternoon. The grand prize will be a 2010

Jamis Dakar Sport dual suspension mountain bike (retail value $875) donated by Jamis Bicycles. A silent auction will include items, such as a 2010 Marin Bikes Drakes Beach Cruiser (retail value $330).

The bikes are on display at the Broken Drum Brewery. Advance raffle tickets are available at the Trips for Kids bike thrift shop (610 4th Street, San Rafael) and at the Broken Drum.

Alex Briggs, Valentino Rossi’s mechanic and A&R super friend, has put together the ultimate Ducati MotoGP experience auction, with all proceeds going towards the disaster relief efforts for the flooding in Australia. Called the worst flood in Australia in the past 50 years, the waters have hit the states of Queensland and Victoria with devastating affect since December 2010 (damages are being estimated in the 10′s of billions of dollars), causing Briggs to want to do something for his home country (most of Rossi’s crew hails from Australia as well).

Australian Grand Prix organisers are to help raise money for the victims of the Queensland flooding by auctioning off a ride in a two-seater Formula 1 car.
