CHICO — BMX riders raced to raise more than $1,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Sunday at the Silver Dollar BMX track in Chico.

About 50 riders and 100 spectators showed up to tackle the track and cheer for the athletes who raced to fight cancer.

In the 1960s, an Air Force medic named Jack Smith made skateboards for kids on his base. Now, a half century later, his son – also Jack Smith – is skateboarding across the country in his father’s honor, raising money for the disease that devastated him.

“It was sad and difficult to watch,” Smith, of Morro Bay, said about his father’s battle with Alzheimer’s. “My dad had a very sharp mind.”

PORTLAND, Ore. – A retired couple from Boise, Idaho, has embarked on a nearly 4,000-mile cross-country journey and they’re raising money for wounded warriors along the way.

Darrel and Roseann Mooney just recently set off on a four-month tandem bicycle ride that will take them from Washington state to Washington, D.C.
