The short, redheaded, freckled-faced kid looks more like a candidate to carry your groceries to the car at Publix than for superstardom, but that’s what Ricky Carmichael is: His nickname is “GOAT,” as in Greatest Of All Time, which in the world of motocross motorcycle racing he may well be. He’s the only rider in the AMA motocross history to have an undefeated season — and he did it twice.
Carmichael — a 29-year-old native of Clearwater who lives with wife Ursula and their twins near Tallahassee — has been busy making the transition from racing on two wheels to four. Chinese cars have been displayed at the Detroit Auto Show for the past several years. Many industry critics ridiculed them for design or quality flaws. But others see these first Chinese vehicles and remember how Japanese and Korean cars were once laughed off—only to become mainstream products in America.
Kathleen Ligocki, CEO of GS Motors and formerly president of Ford of Mexico, expects Chinese-designed cars to begin production in Mexico in 2010—and make their way to the US about five years after first testing the waters in Latin America and Canada. Sebastien Bourdais will dovetail his second season of Formula 1 with a bid to win the Le Mans 24 Hours sportscar classic.
A Toro Rosso spokeswoman confirmed to itv.com/f1 that a report in French newspaper L’Equipe suggesting Bourdais would be part of Peugeot’s 2009 Le Mans line-up was correct.
Peugeot will make an official announcement at its headquarters in France on Monday afternoon.
