Once a year, to the delight of speed demons from around the country, a stretch of normally deserted highway becomes a Texas version of the autobahn—a road with no speed limit.

And better yet, the traffic cops allow it. They’ve been known to encourage the speeders who sometimes top 160 mph.

“It’s like grown-up summer camp,” said Lester Pittenger, a 55-year-old retired social worker from Somerville, N.J.

Pittenger drove his white 2001 Corvette 1,965 miles to West Texas to take part in this weekend’s Big Bend Open Road Race, one of only a handful of opportunities for people with fast cars to go real fast—legally—on a regular highway…  Details

 Juan Montoya and the power of the Earnhardt-Childress engine alliance proved an unbeatable combination Saturday, as Montoya streaked to the pole at Talladega Superspeedway.

Montoya turned the second of his two qualifying laps in his No. 42 Chevrolet in 50.890 seconds (188.171 mph), edging Ford driver Greg Biffle (188.141 mph) by .008 seconds (watch video). For the first time in his career, Montoya will start from the top spot in a Cup Series race when the field takes the green flag for Sunday’s Aaron’s 499 (1 p.m. ET on FOX)…  Details

TALLADEGA, Ala. — It was difficult to tell from the speeds they posted, but Reed Sorenson and Robby Gordon were ruled by NASCAR to have been driving cars that were illegal during qualifying Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway.

Driving the No. 43 Dodge for Richard Petty Motorsports, Sorenson posted a top qualifying lap speed of 185.902 miles per hour, which would have placed him 35th on the starting grid…  Details

As much as I love NASCAR, I will admit that among my racing friends, I am one of the few that still enjoys watching a race every weekend.

When I became a fan in 2004, I was lucky to also meet a great group of people who had been fans for “ages”. They were from all points across the country: Ohio, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Nevada, California, South Carolina, Florida, West Virginia, Virginia, Idaho, Toronto (yes, Canada), and multiple points in between. All had been fans of the sport for years, and they covered the gambit of who they rooted for: Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Dale Junior, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Steve Park, Michael Waltrip….well, you get the idea.
