ice-boat2the middle of Poland’s largest lake covered by ice, a hundred or so speed demons fly across the frozen surface in special sail boats on blades.

Sleek and built to race, the narrow boat hulls are fixed on a base of three gleaming blades and sports sails like those used in windsurfing to harness wind power and roar across frozen water.

“It’s the speed that gives you an adrenaline rush,” says Tomasz Zakrzewski, ranked number fourth in the world in the DN class ice boat racing.

Sailing on ice is his passion.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said Saturday it has heard the concerns of the motorcycle and ATV industries and riders and is responding by taking action to meet their needs. The agency has decided that machines designated for youths ages 12 to 15 — formerly the Y12 category — are not prohibited under new lead content regulations and can be sold, an agency representative confirms with Dealernews.

“It’s time for everyone to be aware that those models for youths 12 to 15 are not deemed to be children’s products under the law,” said Scott Wolfson, a CPSC spokesman. “Those that are the old Y12 or any newer version of a model [for 12- to 15-year-olds] do not have to come off showroom floors and can be sold appropriately to young riders,” he says….  More info

JOEL FURMAN’s iceboat — a plywood shingle on skate blades, with a Sunfish sail — clacked and clattered over the frozen Great South Bay at 50 miles per hour.

“Movin’, huh?” yelled Mr. Furman, 60, sheeting in his fluttering sail on a recent blustery Sunday. He was wearing goggles and a crash helmet. “Cold, huh?”

The world’s fastest snowmobiles will be pitted head-to-head when the World Series Ice Drags hits the track at Gaylord Regional Airport this weekend. This is the second year for the event, promoted by the Central Ontario Snowmobile Drag Racing Association (COSDRA).

Officials are waiting until Thursday morning to decide whether to postpone the event due to weather. The races would be rescheduled for Feb. 27-March 1…. More info
