It’s the end of the month, and the cops can’t seem to scribble out tickets fast enough. I’ve seen them waving down bikers in Isla Vista and perched along the bike paths on campus, ready to pounce on skateboarders. The man in blue seems to be in a state of frenzy.

long time ago, a distant cousin told me – among other loony conspiracy theories – that cops need to meet a certain quota of tickets at the end of each month in order to keep a good standing. I didn’t really believe him or really care, at the time. To be honest, I still don’t completely believe it, but I can’t help noticing a bit of a pattern. Cops are usually present, handing out a few citations to remind us that they’re watching, and…  More info…

Drew Powers is a full time student and mt. bike racer from the San Francisco Bay Area.  He and a group of friends and fellow racers piled into a large van and made the long drive to the May, 2007 Angel Fire Nation Mt. Bike race in New Mexico to race and celebrate his 21st birthday.  Drew advanced to the semi final round of Pro mountain cross race where he got a bad start at the gate.  He was trying to chase down the race leaders when he dislocated his shoulder at a very bad moment. Listen to his description of what happened and try to image it happening to you.

Drew survived the crash and is doing great today. The crash injured both shoulders, one required surgery, broke his helmet, knocked himself out for a couple of minutes, received a concussion, and was actually blinded by the impact of the crash for awhile.

He claims he couldn’t and didn’t drink when celebrating his 21st birthday because of the concussion, right, we’re supposed to believe this knowing Drew?  Here is a picture taken the day after the crash, his 21st birthday.
