The moment that Tina Waitzman faced her addiction was when she came into the bicycle shop on crutches.

She had been hit by a car while riding and suffered a broken back and broken leg. While she did allow herself three months of convalescence, most of that time was spent fantasizing about a replacement bike for the one that had been totaled.

“I couldn’t stand not having a bike in the garage,” says Waitzman, who bought another one and was on it before she was off the crutches altogether. “I have to ride. If I don’t, I’m irritable.”…  More info

SANTA CRUZ — Greg LeMond’s winning Tour de France bicycle. A two-wheeler equipped with a Ghanaian bamboo frame. One of the first carbon-frame bikes ever made.

All of the above — and more — trace their roots to Santa Cruz, and all are part of “25 Years of Santa Cruz Bicycle Design + Innovation,” an exhibit opening Friday at the Museum of Art and History at the McPherson Center.

The exhibit will showcase the county’s place as a global hub for bicycle creativity that has spawned such brands as Specialized, Giro and Calfee Design, organizers say. The exhibit opens just in time for the Amgen Tour of California’s stage two finish in Santa Cruz on Feb. 16. In fact, racers will cross the finish line just a block away.

SOME of the country’s top mountain bikers will pedal it out in the 40-kilometre X Scenic Cross Country race through Timaru’s Centennial Park this weekend.

The New Zealand Mountain Bike Cup is what 140 riders are striving for. The competition consists of six races three in the North Island and three in the South and this is the second South Island round…  More info

Dates have been announced for this year’s Merida Bikes Marathon Series. There will be five UK events between April and September – Builth Wells, Crickhowell, Llanwrtyd Wells, Selkirk and Ruthin – plus a ‘Merida Marathon on Holiday’ round in Bad Goisern, Austria.

Each event will have four course lengths to choose from so every rider can find a challenge. The only exception is the Exposure Lights Big Night Out weekend at Builth Wells, where there will be one course length on Saturday night and three options on Sunday…  More infoÂ
