Dawn was breaking. The wheels of the bike crunched over the shale-covered surface of the path as the wind swirled beyond the overhanging ledge. Conditions were far from ideal: damp, misty and with more than the hangover of a storm in the air, they left little margin for error – an error that equated to a sheer 600 foot drop down to the waiting rocks and waves of the Atlantic. Astana rider Levi Leipheimer won the second stage of the Vuelta of Castilla and Leon cycling race Tuesday, beating teammate Alberto Contador by 16 seconds.
Leipheimer won the 17-mile time trial Tuesday around the northern town of Palencia in 33 minutes, 17.78 seconds. Garmin-Slipstream rider David Zabriskie was third, 22 seconds behind Leipheimer.
Leipheimer, who won the Tour of California this season, leads Contador in the overall standings by 16 seconds…Â Details

Lance Armstrong says racing in the Giro d’Italia in May is still “very doable†even though his broken collarbone is a bit more serious than first thought.
He says new tests show “multiple pieces†of broken bone. Armstrong will have surgery on Wednesday in Austin, and a metal plate will be inserted to stabilize his collarbone… Details
