Cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to excitement and high energy fun this April. The Sea Otter Classic, a four-day celebration of sport, has a multitude of events, activities and action planned for a long weekend of fun, family and community, April 16-19, 2009.

Action All Around and Up Above

At any one time, spectators in the Sea Otter Village can enjoy 360-degree views of races and activities going on around the venue, including games, parties, contests, costumes, team autographs, personal conversations with the pros, product demos, beer and BBQ, live music and bargain bins and samples in the Expo.

The action will even be overhead, as teams of specialists do flips and stunts in various shows and events around the venue. And on Saturday and Sunday, as part of the midday ceremonies kicking off the Pro racing on each day… Details

After setting a new national record earlier today, Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo.) became the first American in 13 years to win an elite men’s world title on the track, capturing the rainbow jersey in the 4-kilometer individual pursuit Thursday night in Poland.

Phinney clocked a winning time of 4:17.631 to beat Australia’s Jack Bobridge in the gold-medal final. Seeded second, Bobridge rode a 4:20.091 in the final to claim the silver medal, while Belgium’s Dominique Cornu took the bronze in 4:22.347.

Earlier in the day, Phinney rode a 4:15.160 to break his own national record and claim the top seed.

Phinney’s world championship is the first by an American male track rider since Marty Nothstein won a keirin championship in 1996. The last American to win a men’s pursuit title was Mike McCarthy in 1992.

Lance Armstrong is at his home in Austin, recovering after Wednesday’s surgery on his right collarbone.

The pro-cyclist broke his clavicle into several pieces in a racing accident in Spain, Monday. After surgery and some time in the recovery room, Lance Armstrong walked out of Austin’s Central Park Medical building, his right arm in a sling under his shirt.

Forty disabled athletes, including six war veterans and five women, braved the 1,000-foot climb up Wabash Hill during hand-cycling races Thursday — opening day of the 2009 Redlands Bicycle Classic.

Carlos Moleda, a 45-year-old former Navy SEAL paralyzed by gunshot wounds during the 1989 invasion of Panama, was one of the lucky ones. He had competed on the grueling 3½-mile course once before.
