Pietermartizburg, South Africa (July 30, 2010) – Four more medals will be coming home to the United States after day two of the UCI BMX World championships in South Africa. Fifteen-year-old Felicia Stancil (Lake Villa, Ill.) dominated her Challenge Class division to earn a world title as did Nathan Padilla (Lakewood, Calif.) in the 16-year-old boys division. With amateur class competitions complete, attention will now turn to the junior and elite superstars as they compete for the title of world champion on Saturday. Â
Day two consisted of the 14-and-over junior challenge classes as well as the masters events. American wizz Felicia Stancil wrapped up her seventh world title at only age 15, sweeping each moto round and romping to a lopsided win in the 15 Girls class. Downhill qualifying went smoothly. Yesterday’s rain was greeted by beaming sunshine this morning that quickly dried the track. Riders got their lines dialed in short order during the morning’s practice and were full ‘pinner’ by the time qualifying came ‘round.
Sabrina Jonnier was not liking the track, and was working hard to get her line choice dialed in for some of the trickier sections. She was first off, but her time held for less than a minute; that’s when fellow Frenchwoman Emmeline Ragot, the third rider off, lowered the bar by nearly 9 seconds. Jamie Bestwick has won his seventh gold in BMX Vert, earning the event’s first-ever four-peat in the process. As has been the case so often for much of the last decade, Bestwick was nearly untouchable Friday night, throwing a variety of 540 variations, including alley oop 5s in the 11-foot range, double downside tailwhips and downside tailwhip flairs that soared well above most of his other competitors.Â
