The number is painted in white on the blue tube of Arielle Martin’s BMX bike designed specially for the London Olympics, just below the handle bars, where she can look down and see it and remind herself of her journey. The significance? “Roughly the number of days I had to wait,†Martin wrote on her website two weeks ago, “from the last gate drop in Beijing to the first in London.â€
Martin won’t get to ride it.

Shanaze Reade has learned a lot from the crash that ended her quest for an Olympic gold medal in the final corner of the BMX course in Beijing four years ago.
The British rider was a two-time defending world champion at the time and had entered the event as the favorite. In the final, she looked poised for a runner-up finish but she went all out in the final curve, crashed out and saw the inaugural BMX Olympic title go to Frenchwoman Anne-Caroline Chausson.
