If all goes according to plan, skateboarders will be doing kick flips, nose slides and McTwists at a skateboard park at Northside Park by July 2010.

The design of the $850,000 park, to be about a third the size of a football field, was unveiled to a City Council committee earlier this week.

The Kaua‘i Police Department Patrol Services Bureau has designated February as Pedestrian Safety and Skateboard Awareness Month, a county news release announced Tuesday.

“We’re hoping that by focusing on pedestrian safety, motorists and pedestrians will be reminded that safety on our roadways is a shared responsibility,” Acting Captain Mark Scribner said in the release. “We also want to call attention to the county’s skateboard ordinance because it’s becoming a major safety issue.”

It’s the end of the month, and the cops can’t seem to scribble out tickets fast enough. I’ve seen them waving down bikers in Isla Vista and perched along the bike paths on campus, ready to pounce on skateboarders. The man in blue seems to be in a state of frenzy.

 long time ago, a distant cousin told me – among other loony conspiracy theories – that cops need to meet a certain quota of tickets at the end of each month in order to keep a good standing. I didn’t really believe him or really care, at the time. To be honest, I still don’t completely believe it, but I can’t help noticing a bit of a pattern. Word sure got around town that the Lodi Skate Park was to reopen on Monday after being shut down for more than a year due to equipment damage.
