 Risk is one of the foundations of snowboarding, part of what makes it worthwhile and fun. Stoked Mentoring takes that notion of risk and reward and throws in the late 180: using life skills gained through action sports to open up new worlds for at-risk youth.
Stoked recruits teens from low-income, high-density urban areas in NYC and LA, those streets and schools where there’s a strong chance that they’ll fall into negative behaviors: gang involvement, drug abuse, dropping out, roller-blading etc. By partnering these teens with successful adults and having them learn to surf, skate and snowboard together, i.e. taking their beats on-hill at the same time and getting back up … Details
Daniel Uribe sold his first piece of candy at the age of 8. A natural entrepreneur, he’d buy the stuff cheap at a local store then peddle it door to door at a much higher price.
Later the young man graduated to the more labor-intensive business of buying skateboards on eBay, painting them with elaborate graphic designs and selling them to friends.
Today, Uribe, 19, is the founder and creative director of Lazer Bearings, a Lakewood-based company that sells skateboard ball bearings imported from China.
