When you hear Oliver Percovich talk about Skateistan, the skate school that he started for kids in Kabul, Afghanistan, you get the feeling that you’re at the beginning of a movement not unlike skateboarding’s birth. The amazement, vigor and happiness that skateboarding incites in the children around Kabul seems to parallel what the early history of skateboarding must have felt like—the late 40s, the 50s and 60s when kids turned the crate scooter into the first square boards.
