On December 6th, Next Up had the great privilege of being invited to TWS’ skatepark in Oceanside, CA for an awesome Christmas celebration! The kids got to skate and eat pizza in an amazing private skatepark. Santa also came out to hook the kids up with a bunch of free stuff, and he even gave the kids an amazing demo in his suit, beard and all! It was a great day for everyone, and an awesome way to end the year here at Next Up.
Street skating is all about pushing around and exploring your surroundings, and there’s no better place to do that than New York City. There are endless spots in all five boroughs, and unlike many other US cities, you can get everywhere in NYC without a car. All you need is your board, a MetroCard, and some healthy motivation.
As one of the world’s most iconic cities, it’s not surprising that NYC has been one of the most popular skate destinations for decades. Historically, lower Manhattan has been the hub of skateboarding in NY, and sessions at the Brooklyn Banks date back to the early 1980s. The streets of downtown, midtown and everywhere in between are featured in countless videos that helped shape the aesthetic and identity of east coast skateboarding as a whole.
Get an inside look at the incredible Skateistan school in Mazar-e-Sharif, built in 2013. This facility is truly unique in Afghanistan, where safe spaces for children are exceptionally rare… And a place – just for kids – with skateparks, classrooms, and a climbing wall? Unthinkable.

Why? It matters for kids to have safe places to play, especially those living in difficult circumstances or in a conflict situation. In places like Afghanistan, Cambodia, and South Africa, the streets aren’t a safe place for children. We know the value of a warm meal and school supplies, but Skateistan’s programs provide all that and more. Children deserve more – they deserve a childhood. They deserve an escape from the realities and stresses of growing up in extremely difficult settings.
