The National Weather Service issued a high-surf warning for Southern California, with waves as high as 8 feet expected on southwest-facing beaches.
Forecasters said the waves will peak Saturday, a day when thousands are expected to head to the beaches because of the continuing heat wave. Some minor flooding in low-lying coastal areas is possible, officials said.
“If you plan on swimming, always stay near staffed lifeguard stations. But the safest plan is to stay out of the water completely,” the NWS said in its statement. “Stay off rocks and jetties as large waves can fatally force people into the water without warning.”

After an agonising wait the first Round of ‘The 2009 Nomad Shark Island Challenge’ finally got underway in what some are claiming to be suicidal conditions. The anticipated Easterly swell delivered waves in the 2m range with its direction causing some major headaches for some of the riders.
