Surf mats are an Aussie invention have been around since the 1930’s. In fact for many surfers, surf mats or surfoplanes were the vehicle that they first rode waves on, way before their grommethood had begun.
However, there has always been a hard core cult of surf mat riders who never stopped riding them with George Greenough being the most publicly recognizable. They were always singing the praises of their “bow up†missiles with tales of deep tubes rides and red line speed runs.

Top bodyboarder Mark McCarthy (Richards Bay) continued his winning streak in the final of the 2010 Confital World Tour Event in the Canary Islands.
