Surf mats are an Aussie invention have been around since the 1930’s. In fact for many surfers, surf mats or surfoplanes were the vehicle that they first rode waves on, way before their grommethood had begun.

However, there has always been a hard core cult of surf mat riders who never stopped riding them with George Greenough being the most publicly recognizable. They were always singing the praises of their “bow up” missiles with tales of deep tubes rides and red line speed runs.

Gran Canary Island:  The first ever International bodyboarding event at El Fronton on Gran Canary Island  saw some serious action go down in the fierce westerly winds that saw Hawaiian Jeff Hubbard (35 years of age/ Hawaii/Kauai) take the win over local Canary Island rider Diego Cabrera.

Top bodyboarder Mark McCarthy (Richards Bay) continued his winning streak in the final of the 2010 Confital World Tour Event in the Canary Islands. McCarthy, known in the South African Bodyboarding community as ‘Boetie’ bagged his third title in as many competitions and managed to finish the 2010 World Tour with an event win. The first place ensures that he will qualify for the 2011 Grand Slam Series (GSS).
