It’s mid-February, and Western ski resorts are set to celebrate warmer weather, longer days and festive nights by staging everything from Mardi Gras carnivals and spring festivals to other upbeat events.

New Orleans and Rio de Janeiro are more famous for their carnivals, but Angel Fire, Breckenridge, Crested Butte, Keystone, Red River, Snowmass and Vail are ready to launch their own brand of Mardi Gras frivolity.

Shaun White, 22, the champion snowboarder and skateboarder known for his shock of curly red hair, does not know the meaning of off-season. Persistence is the key.

Getting up when you fall, trying again when you fail.

“Who can tell me something you’ve been persistent about?” asked Megan Skiles, 24, of the 34 kids sitting in a circle in the snow at the base of Bolton Valley Ski Area in Vermont.
