Children of all ages were invited out to the second annual Cardboard Box Sled Derby on the Outing Club Sledding Hill on Wednesday morning. The event marked the first day of festivities for the town of Gilford’s Winter Carnival happening this week for children on school vacation.
This year children brought onto the hill some very creative and uniquely designed cardboard sleds, ranging from a basic style sled shaped like a canoe to a large shark and a mini Volkswagen Van sled. All of the designs were made from scratch and out of plain brown cardboard.

West will meet Midwest in the Big Grin 2 ski and snowboard slope-style competition.
“We want to recreate that West Coast feel in the Midwest, and give something to the kids that they don’t always have,†said event organizer John Curtis.
The event is Saturday, March 7, at Mt. McSauba in Charlevoix. More than 30 people competed last year, and 60 to 80 participants are expected this year.
“The message that I always try to get across is that it’s a big competition and the prizes are big, but it’s not all about the competition,†Curtis noted….Â
