Reinfried Herbst of Austria won the men’s World Cup slalom opener on Sunday, and American Bode Miller was disqualified in his first race of the season.
Herbst posted a two-run time of 1 minute, 49.79 seconds down the Black Course to beat runner-up Ivica Kostelic of Croatia by 0.28 seconds. It was Herbst’s sixth career World Cup victory, all in slalom.

Maria Riesch of Germany won the opening women’s World Cup slalom Saturday, edging Lindsey Vonn of the United States by 0.08 seconds.
Riesch, the defending world slalom champion, finished with a two-run time of 1 minute, 48.71 seconds on the Black Course at the World Cup circuit’s northernmost venue above the Arctic Circle.
A group of eight athletes and sport builders have been named for induction to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. This is the largest class of inductees since 1984 for the Hall of Fame, which is located in Ishpeming, Michigan on the Upper Peninsula – the birthplace of organized ski competition in 1905.
