She likes skate boarding, or “shralping” as they call it, and she enjoys working with young people. It’s as simple as that. But, when word got around about the incredible work Nancy Chang is doing to inspire young girls in her community, she suddenly found herself on a plane bound for New York to be recognized as a 2008 L’Oreal Paris’ Woman of Worth.

Chang was recognized for her volunteer work with Skate Like a Girl (SLAG), a Seattle organization whose mission is to “empower young girls and women to grow into strong, confident leaders who promote and implement social equity.”  A University of Washington graduate with a degree in sculpture…  More info

The Maloof Money Cup (www.maloofmoneycup.com), a three-day, five event competition and festival — hailed as the world’s greatest skateboarding competition — is back for a second year. The event, created by Joe Maloof, owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, returns to the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, Calif. during the opening weekend of the OC Fair, July 10-12, 2009.

ice-boat2the middle of Poland’s largest lake covered by ice, a hundred or so speed demons fly across the frozen surface in special sail boats on blades.

Sleek and built to race, the narrow boat hulls are fixed on a base of three gleaming blades and sports sails like those used in windsurfing to harness wind power and roar across frozen water.

“It’s the speed that gives you an adrenaline rush,” says Tomasz Zakrzewski, ranked number fourth in the world in the DN class ice boat racing.

Sailing on ice is his passion.

Sanctuary Skateboards, a Redlands-based company, brings creatures of the sea to the pavement.

Sanctuary Skateboards was started in 1997 by Ken Hill, a retired art teacher, and his son Edward Hill, an engineer. The two combined their talents to create the sea creature-shaped cruising boards.

Unlike other skateboards that may have applique stickers or graphics plastered on an oblong piece of board, Ken and Edward’s skateboards are the design.
