Both events will distribute a total of $75.000 dollars and more than 4500 IBA world points.

On a recent night while I was biking home through UCSB, I saw a now-rare yet familiar sight: Skateboarders trying to “ollie” off the Geology Department stairs by the bike path along Broida Hall. That brought back a flood of memories of Isla Vista’s skateboarding past. It was skateboarding that brought me to this little seaside enclave back in 1985, again in 1986, and it eventually caused me to move up here in 1987. After long nine years, Powell Skateboards steps up with a new roster of skaters and delivers FUN!, the latest video title.

The current roster includes Jordan Hoffart, John White, Josh Hawkins, Dallas Rockvam, Derek Elmendorf, Ben Hatchell and Aldrin Garcia.

Steve Caballero will have a few tricks in the video and a Bonus part. Steve is no longer riding for the Powell brand, and has teamed up again with George Powell and Stacy Peralta to ride for Powell Peralta. Danny Wainwright will not have any tricks in the video, but continues to represent the brand throughout Europe.

After two rounds of racing yesterday, Alex Caizergues (FRA, F-One) and Melissa Gil (USA, Cabrinha) have taken the lead in this years speed world championship, held in Port St. Louis, France.

In total, 35 competitors registered for the first event of the season, and although the weather forecast is not brilliant for the upcoming days, there is hope for the weekend to bring more wind to allow for more racing.

The first heat of the competition was won by Rob Douglas (USA, Cabrinha), the first kiter that broke the speedsailing dominance of the windsurfers last year in Luderitz, and one of the three kiteboarders that made it over 50 knots.
