US Sailing’s Olympic Sailing Committee announced two youth windsurfers Margot Samson (Belleair, Fla.) and Ian Stokes (Norfolk, Va.) have qualified to represent the United States at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games 2010 in Singapore. They join the U.S. Youth Olympic Team of 82 athletes competing in 18 sports, the maximum number of qualified U.S. athletes. The 12-day event kicks off this Saturday, August 14, with an elaborate Opening Ceremony and torch relay. 

The Youth Olympic Games is an international, multi-sport event held in conjunction with the International Olympic Committee that will take place every four years, consistent with the current format of the Olympic Games. This year, some 3,600 athletes, ages 14 to 18 and from 205 countries will compete in the 26 sports that will be featured at the 2012 Olympic Games. Per the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) qualification system for the sport of sailing, eligible athletes must have been born between January 1, 1994 and December 31, 1995  …  Details

The BKSA came back to Barrow for the 4th year in the row. The week leading up to the event was pretty windy and the forecast was not fantastic – however Walney for some reason always delivers!

Friday dawned with a strong cross off South Easterly with a lovely drizzle. The pros got on the water at 12pm with 9 meter kites, there were small kickers and some big moves going down with some spectacular wipe-outs. The rain slowly cleared however the wind then veered and dropped somewhat to a South Westerly direction – making the riding almost bang onshore. On the second day of racing in Alacati the PWA’s fastest were greeted with wall-to-wall sunshine and a gentle breeze. Luckily the wind swiftly strengthened throughout the morning allowing the competition to commence in glamorous conditions by midday. Two races were completed for both the men’s and women’s fleets, giving everyone the opportunity to prove their worth.

Over the course of the day the wind varied between ten and twenty knots causing the sailors to swap gear on a constant heat by heat basis. 9.5s and big boards were the order of the day when the wind was down, and 8.5s and medium boards were preferred when it was up …  Details
