KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup lives up to its name on the third day of competition delivering down the line perfection for the double elimination!

The brutal North Sea greeted the sailors with some epic conditions this morning allowing the world’s most radical wave riders to strut their stuff in conditions that they would normally scour the globe for. Unfortunately, the hallowed cross-off perfection didn’t last all day, leaving the contest at a standstill for the top 16.

When it was going off the set waves were extremely chunky, and pushing on for mast high on occasions. Couple this with 25-30 knots of wind, and you’ve got the ultimate wavesailing playground. The British Bodyboard Club’s Overhead Wedge Air has without doubt been the highlight of the tour so far. After a frustrating summer of fickle conditions and postponed events, at the fourth time of asking, competitors were finally treated to near perfect Tolcarne Wedge giving them an opportunity to boost the big aerial manoeuvres the wave is famous for.

The first day of the competition saw the first round of heats completed and despite a couple of close calls, there were no losses of the top seeded riders. The following day the conditions looked to be excellent once again with the added bonus of some September sunshine. The North American Speed Sailing Project members are getting ready for the long waited 2010 Luderitz Speed Challenge.

After taking the 2010 2010 HAM Challenge, Jamie Douglas, Bill and Rob Douglas are really looking forward to claim the world speed sailing record, property of the l’Hydroptère.

With strong south-westerly winds forecast for the entire day, many of the competitors were at the beach at dawn getting dialled into the conditions. However, the minute the competition was supposed to begin the wind began to backed off forcing head judge, Duncan Coombs to put the contest on hold. By 13:00 it had returned enough for the first heat to start, and with the waves often reaching 2.5m in the sets, Klitmoller was ready to rock the windsurfing world.

Rain squalls and strong gusts hammered their way through the contest area every half an hour causing havoc with the sailors who found it hard to choose the correct gear. 5.7s and 5.3s were the sails of choice for the bigger guys, whereas 5.3s and 4.7s were the weapons used by those a little lighter. Board choice was extremely open and purely down to weight and personal preference with single fins, twin fins, trailer fins, thrusters, and quads all seen scattered on the stones throughout the day  …  Details
