Charlotte Hoecker has been an ice skater for nearly 76 years, and she doesn’t plan to stop any time soon.

The Wausau woman has skated after recovering from a broken bone and nasty cracks to her head. She has skated while raising four children. She has skated through triumphs and tragedies. And she’s not going to let a little thing like turning 80 stop her now.

Consider the double standard in this: If a city resident pedals into town on a bike, he or she is a carbon-footprint hero brimming with health and rewarded with bike paths, convenient racks, even an annual “bike to work” day.

But if a young adult ventures downtown on inline skates, or worse, a skateboard, this (albeit often slightly younger) self-propelled commuter is hauled over by the cops, his transportation may be seized and he or she faces a $50 fine.

It is just plain silly to ban skateboarding and inline skating across the entire city….  Details

An Anoka distributor of boys’ recreational ice skates is participating in a voluntary national recall because of concerns about lead, federal regulators announced this morning.

About 600 pair of Chinese-made DBX Glide Boys Ice Skates, distributed by Pronto Sports Inc. of Anoka, are being recalled because the skates “contain excessive levels of lead, violating the federal lead paint standard,” said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

davisSpeedskater Trevor Marsicano had never skated especially fast in the 1,000 meters, by international racing standards. His best time ranked only modestly inside the top 100 of all-time.

So when the 19-year-old who switched from short-track only two years ago tore more than two full seconds off his previous best and broke the world record in 1:06.88 at the World Cup finale at the Utah Olympic Oval on Saturday, just about everybody was stunned.

“I didn’t know what to think,” teammate Shani Davis said. “I was scared. I was like, ‘Oh, my gosh,’ because he didn’t skate 1:07, ever. He went straight to 1:06.”

But even Marsicano knew his record might not last long….
