big-dogFrom August 17 through the end of the year, Big Dog Motorcycles will stop production at its Wichita, Kan., plant for a total of seven weeks. The stoppage began immediately and will run for four weeks, followed by intermittent closures through December.

The company adds that no layoffs were announced, but all company staff has received a temporary 20 percent pay cut. Workers affected by the production stops will be eligible for unemployment benefits.

For decades, the product development center at Harley-Davidson Inc. has been a place where iconic motorcycles are created – sometimes from a simple sketch – and come to life after thousands of hours of refinement.

KEYSTONE — Motorcycle engines purr, then roar, as lady bikers zoom toward Dillon, handlebar fringe blowing in the wind. Meanwhile, women wearing black leather chaps chat on foot and check out each other’s bikes. Last Friday evening August 14, I was informed by an unofficial source that “Big Dog Motorcycles was stopping production for the rest of the month of August 2009. That for the remainder of the year there will be temporary production furloughs. That a 20% pay reduction across the board was applied to all employees left after the layoffs“.
