The era of electric motorcycling began today when entrants in the first clean emissions Grand Prix proved their viability by lapping the famous IOM TT circuit in excess of 80 mph during the first practice session for Friday’s race.

The honours in the first ever session went to the Indian Agni Motors entry based around a 2007 model Suzuki GSX-R600 road bike frame and fitted with two Agni 95 motors and 63 70AH Kokam lithium-polymer batteries. Rated by the team at around 40-50 bhp, the bike was the first electric motorcycle to complete a lap of the 37 mile course, with Team Agni rider Rob Barber averaging 84.81 mph to the time sheets.

Italian icon Valentino Rossi will race fellow Yamaha MotoGP world champion’s Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey and Kenny Roberts in a special karting clash at the Laguna Seca GP in early July.

The 30-year-old Italian confirmed his participation in the one-off demo event on the eve of his home race in Mugello this weekend.   

The legendary quartet will dice it out driving Yamaha TZ250 super karts on the Thursday afternoon before the American GP, which Rossi won for the first time in 2008 after a classic scrap with Ducati rival Casey Stoner.

Mission Motors has been refining the Mission One electric motorcycle in preparation for the TTXGP and they’ve added a full fairing to help with the expected high speeds of the TT course. Unlike many racetracks with lots of turns and shorter straights, the TT course allows a lot of high speed and wind resistance will play a significant role.
