The fastest motorcycle road racers on the planet, the MotoGP World Championship, and the best America has to offer in three different classes will take over Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca Friday through Sunday at the fifth annual Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix.

To kick off the two-wheel action Independence Day weekend, former Yamaha World champions Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson and “King” Kenny Roberts will take on “The Doctor,” Valentino Rossi, at 3:30 p.m. today in a special free exhibition on World SuperKarts.

The two-wheel action begins Friday with practice sessions. Saturday there will be qualifying sessions, including MotoGP, and the AMA American SuperSport race. Sunday, there will be racing in MotoGP, AMA Daytona Sportbike and AMA American Superbike.

Valentino Rossi – who took a landmark 100th GP win in Saturday’s Dutch TT at Assen – could still break motorcycle racing legend Giacomo Agostini’s record for the most GP wins.

The boy from Bergamo – known to the tifosi simply as “Ago” – won 123 races from 1965-76, although some pundits say one race was void and his record is 122. Agostini believes that mark is well within Rossi’s reach.

Following a thrilling victory in Barcelona, when he overtook Yamaha teammate Jorge Lorenzo in the very last corner of the race, reigning MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi revealed he has set a couple of new challenges for the future. Aside from going after his 100th win in the FIM Road Racing World Championship, Rossi is also looking to debut in the famous North American NASCAR Series or the 24 Hours of Le Mans race.

First thing’s first, however, as Rossi admitted the first objective is to clinch his 100th win in the series. The Italian rider admitted this will more than likely come during the course of this year, as he needs to keep winning races if he wants to defend his world title. As he goes for both targets this season, at least one more win is a must in 2009.
