After a 52-year hiatus, Catalina Island once again opened the city of Avalon to the roar of racing as the Red Bull 2010 Catalina Motocross Grand Prix kicked off on the first weekend of December. Considered the event of the year, racers and spectators alike came out to be a part of history in the making. There was no shortage of nostalgia and excitement with 800 rider entries and an estimated 3000 plus spectators.

Racing on the island took place from 1951-1958 during the month of May and was a premier West Coast racing event during that time. Avalon, CA – December 6, 2010 – History was made this weekend as the Red Bull Catalina Grand Prix, one of California’s most renowned motorcycles races, made a triumphant return after a 52-year hiatus. The famed race, which was held on the island between 1951 and 1958, was widely considered one of the most unique and prestigious races of the era. The weekend’s cloudy skies and chilly temperatures didn’t stop the more than 800 riders from tackling the newly minted 6-mile course, which featured a variety of terrain including a challenging motocross section and a fire road that took racers up winding turns and around steep bluffs high above the port city of Avalon.

Racing returns to Catalina

Day one has ended at the Catalina Grand Prix and, as the sun sets over the hills, the harbor city of Avalon is still bustling with riders and fans alike. Regardless of how the racing went during the course of the day, the atmosphere on the island is something that will not be soon forgotten. With riders coming from as far east as New Jersey, and as far south as Argentina, everyone has a story to tell about their day-one experience on Catalina Island.
