Spain’s Alberto Contador took the overall lead at the Tour of the Basque Country on Wednesday after winning the toughest stage of the six-day race.
The 2007 Tour de France winner, team mate of Lance Armstrong in the Astana team, attacked alone on the final steep climb of the 172.5km third stage from Villatuerta to Eibar.

Sacramento police have arrested two men on charges related to the theft of a bicycle belonging to seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong.
Officers said on Tuesday that they arrested 39-year-old Lee Crider on suspicion of stealing Armstrong’s Trek Livestrong 1274 and two other bikes from members of Team Astana.

Lance Armstrong and Astana team manager Johan Bruyneel continue to dispute a report by France’s anti-doping agency (AFLD) that claims Armstrong misbehaved during an unannounced out-of-competition drug test administered March 17. The AFLD report, sent to the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) last week, alleges Armstrong deliberately stalled the test by at least 20 minutes by insisting on double-checking the AFLD tester’s credentials before giving urine, blood and hair samples, and then showering, out of sight of the tester, as Bruyneel verified the representative’s identity and request.
