Lance Armstrong’s cash-strapped Astana team are not yet out of the financial woods, team manager Johan Bruyneel said at the Giro d’Italia on Sunday.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) set Sunday as a deadline for the Kazakh-based team to meet its financial requirements after the riders complained their salaries were not being paid.

The UCI has threatened to withdraw Astana’s Pro-Tour licence.

“The financial woes that left salaries unpaid are not completely resolved yet,” Bruyneel said in a team statement.

“I hope that the team sponsors will meet the deadline for the bank guarantee and the payments. Moreover the UCI now wants more guarantees about the team for the rest of the year.”  …  Details

For David Sloan, online social networking doesn’t mean Facebook. It means raising more than $20,000 for the American Diabetes Association using his personalized Tour de Cure Web site.

“I asked literally everybody that’s in my Outlook contact database for donations,” said Sloan, who’ll ride in today’s Tour de Cure, a bike ride from San Antonio to Austin to benefit the ADA. “And I got some real surprises as a result, because there are always people looking for some place to donate to charity, but they just don’t know where to give.”

Last year, Sloan was top fundraiser for Tour de Cure in Texas, and the ninth-biggest fundraiser across the nation.

Lance Armstrong is back on schedule in his Tour de France preparations.

Two months ago, the seven-time Tour winner fell and broke his collarbone at a race in Spain, jeopardizing his entire comeback after three and a half years of retirement.

Now, in the third week of the Giro d’Italia, Armstrong is starting to keep up with the race leaders on the tough climbs.

Former world cycling champion Tom Boonen will resume cycling next week and his team Quick Step said Monday it could take legal action if necessary to get him into the Tour de France despite his second positive cocaine test in as many years.

Boonen drew a heavy fine from his team on top of his suspension after his failed test last month. But Quick Step said its top rider would resume cycling at a local race in Gullegem on June 2 before heading to the Dauphine Libere, a preparation race for the Tour.
