With just one race left in the United States Collegiate Skiing and Snowboarding Association’s season, the Sierra Nevada College snowboard team is getting prepared for nationals.

They finished off the regular season last weekend with a romp over their USCSA Northern California foes — placing first in all four giant slalom races at Squaw Valley USA.

“Our guys are strong and feeling excited going into nationals,” said coach Jeff Corrado. “I think we’re pretty strong in all areas and have a lot of talented guys who are disciplined.”

Team leaders Spencer Cordovano and Seth Gunsauls traded first-place finishes this weekend, with junior Cordovano taking the top-spot Saturday and senior Gunsauls Sunday…. More info

northstarChester freshman Kenny Wilson has won all five of his high school races this season. Wilson has been racing since a child and now trains several times a week.

The Chester High School ski and snowboard teams competed in their fifth race of the season at Northstar Friday, Feb. 6.  The giant slalom course was blanketed in fog, but snow conditions were decent thanks to a small amount of new snow the night before.

Forget about downhill skiers, hockey players and figure skaters. The most famous — and marketable — athlete expected to go for gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Whistler is a snowboarder.

It’s much more likely you know him, and his mop of long, curly red hair, from magazine covers or Hewlett-Packard Co. commercials than for his seemingly impossible 1260s — 31/2 full rotations, picture a spinning top — as he explodes from the steep walls of a snowboard halfpipe at the X Games.

Lake Arbutus was filled with the sound of motors on Sunday, and the dust certainly was flying at Russell Park.  Ice dust, that is.

About 630 people came out to Hatfield on Feb. 8 to watch and participate in the sixth-annual ATV and motorcycle ice races, put on through the Hatfield ATV Riders club. A moderate winter day with temperatures around the freezing mark provided an enjoyable opportunity for those who attended.
