Maria Riesch of Germany won the opening women’s World Cup slalom Saturday, edging Lindsey Vonn of the United States by 0.08 seconds.
Riesch, the defending world slalom champion, finished with a two-run time of 1 minute, 48.71 seconds on the Black Course at the World Cup circuit’s northernmost venue above the Arctic Circle.
U.S. Team snowboarder Michelle Gorgone of Boston launched the 2010 Race to the Cup alpine snowboard series with a gold medal performance at Copper Mountain yesterday. “It was a good day today and a great way to start the season,” Gorgone said. “I just tried to ride smart and consistent without pushing myself too hard.”

A group of eight athletes and sport builders have been named for induction to the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. This is the largest class of inductees since 1984 for the Hall of Fame, which is located in Ishpeming, Michigan on the Upper Peninsula – the birthplace of organized ski competition in 1905.
