Reed Stark came out to California with three days worth of clothes and a bloodlust for chunks of steel. Navigating and executing by day, moving under veil of tree-cast shadows by night, searching hours just for a safe floor to sleep on. All it took was one wrong step and Reed’s quest was forestalled until next season. With ice on foot and spoils in hand, Reed hitchhiked back to the Midwest to devise his next excursion into the jungle.
The day started a little earlier than planned for a lot of the Elite riders as a storm was coming in and the program was shortened. In horrible conditions both the Men and Women were informed the World Championships race would start from the 5 meter hill instead of the 8 meter set-up that everyone had practiced on all week. It was a good decision to keep things safe for the riders. With little warm up time for everyone the race got underway quickly with a direct transfer system. BMX has some die-hard fans because the grandstands were full all the time while the rain was pouring down. Different tricks of the trade were used to keep the tires, grips and pedals dry to avoid slipping coming out at the start. The wet track required a different approach to make it through to the next round.
Collin Hudson from the United States of America was on his way to the gold in the Junior Men class until Exequiel Torres from Argentina showed he had more left in the tank on the last part of the technical track. It was a dragrace to the finish line ….
Glenn Salyers sent me this video a couple weeks ago and it blew my mind. The technical riding is absurd (I’ve basically given up on calling out NBD’s at this point but I’m pretty sure he’s got some in here), he deals with a ton of big burly set up’s and he slides around in a crank arm grind like a man on a mission. Glenn, I don’t know you too well, so I hope you don’t mind me saying that you’re a damn fool for this one.
Sean Ricany and Eric Lichtenberger tend to be the names people discuss when talking about the Stranger DVD, but there is no denying that local Common Crew associate Denim Cox offered up a stellar performance in the video. Despite having a name that conjures up images of rug burned penises, Denim rides like a man possesed and Miles Rogoish of course did a great job putting it all together.
