Close to 200 racers age 4-50 and their families from Illinois and four surrounding states descended on the Waukegan BMX track last weekend for the Midwest Regional competition.

The three-day event was condensed into two due to Friday’s rains, but thanks to the Waukegan Park District crew, the dirt track was in near-perfect shape for the Saturday races. The event attracted riders from Iowa, Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin, as well as Illinois because of its quadruple-points possibilities.

bigGermany will host a high-class dirt jump event called the “BIG IN BAVARIA”. Two contests unite the world’s best mountain bike and BMX dirt jumpers during the BIKE EXPO, the brand new international bicycle tradeshow from July 23rd to 26th. As you can guess, hearing the title “BIG IN BAVARIA”, it’s not only about huge doubles, but also about the biggest names in the sport. Riders like Andreu Lacondeguy (ESP), Brandon Semenuk (CAN), Benny Korthaus (GER) or Darren Berrecloth (CAN) who represent the mountain bike sport, or BMX legends like Ryan Nyquist (USA), Corey Bohan (AUS) or Cory Nastazio (USA) are on the invite list…  Details 

Kyle Bennett is a three-time Union Cycliste Internationale world champion whose Olympic bid was cut short by a dislocated shoulder. The 29-year-old Conroe native fell in love with BMX competition when he was just 7 and had gone pro by the time he was 18. While still a pup by most standards, Bennett says he’s feeling his age in a physically unforgiving sport. He now takes better care of himself and says recovering from injury and just plain sore muscles is easier with a good diet and a lot of stretching.

Q: BMX cycling seems like it would be hard on your body, especially your joints. What aches and pains do you have?

A: I’ve had lots of stitches, cuts and scrapes growing up. Broken collarbone, ribs, separated shoulder. The pretty good setback was my ACL tear at the end of ’06. I had knee surgery, an ACL replacement, but I came back from it and won the world championship.

Q: What do you do now to prevent injury?

A: A lot of stretching. As I get older I realize how important it is to be limber.
