Adelaide, Australia (July 23, 2009) — American riders dominated opening day of the 2009 UCI BMX World Championships on Thursday, taking seven of the 17 world titles up for grabs.Over 2,000 BMX riders from 32 countries have converged on Adelaide to compete for world titles at the Adelaide Showgrounds, and the first day of competition featured Challenge class riders age 14 and younger on a 310 meter indoor track.
The strongest showing by Americans came when the 12-year-old boys took to the track. Americans swept the podium with Brock Hefron (Chandler, Ariz.) claiming the world title. Collin Hudson (Longmont, Colo.) and Damian Ontiveros (Fremont, Calif.) followed for the silver and bronze medals while fellow American Nicolas Wolthers (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) placed seventh.

Otherwise known as bicycle motocross, BMX bikes have been used for quite some time in races and stunts which started in the early 1970s.
Various organizations have been created to support this growing sport over the years. It started in 1974, where the very first National Bicycle League was formed by George E. Esser, in Florida. Next in 1977, the American Bicycle Association was created and then in 1981 where the International BMX Federation was formed. It was in 1982 where the very first world championship was held. And just last year 2008, BMX as a sport was included in the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing having two categories: Male, where the gold medal was won by Maris Strombergs from Latvia and one for Female which Anne-Caroline Chausson from France claimed the very first gold medal.
