The first round of the men’s single elimination wave event has begun, with eight heats completed on a rising tide. After a busy registration morning, competitors were given the chance to perform on one the world’s most impressive stages, where ballistic winds tore through the wings once again.
Pozo Izquierdo has positioned itself as one of the highlights of the PWA World tour, thanks to a combination of gale-force winds and rolling swells. Sebastian Kornum of Denmark became the youngest winner ever in the 25 times the race has been contested in the waters off the British Virgin Islands today. The 17-year old U17 World Champion won both the morning race and the afternoon race of Sandy Cay to finish the event with four straight stage victories in one of the more impressive HIHO victories in recent years.
“I didn’t make any mistakes today,†said Kornum, who noted that he checked the course in the early morning before the race to set his strategy. The 24th Windsurfing and Kiteboarding World Cup will be held at Fuerteventura, the Hawaii of Europe, and as well as white sand beaches, blue skies and summer temperatures, the island also has all the wind a windsurfer or kiteboarder could wish for.
From July 17 to August 1, spectators can witness the wind-powered acrobats fly distances of up to 70 metres, reaching heights of up to 15 metres at the Windsurfing and Kiteboarding World Championship off Fuerteventura.
