Dunkerbeck settles a score, and Jaggi strengthens her lead, after an action packed few days on the Catalunyan coast. 

The wind gods blessed the racers in Costa Brava with some awesome conditions on both day one and day three of competition, allowing two of the PWA’s longest standing legends to take control of their respective fleets at the event, and move into pole position in the overall rankings.  

Fifty-nine men competed in a full round of high-octane slalom on the first day, which saw Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard, Severne, Mystic) take the early lead. A second elimination was also started, but the wind dropped off in the early evening causing the racing to be cancelled for another day. Takapuna Beach was today confirmed as the venue for the National Ocean Water Sports Centre (NOWSC) by the Minister of Sport and Recreation the Hon. Murray McCully and North Shore City Mayor, Andrew Williams. Speaking at the nearby Takapuna Boating Club, the Minister confirmed that the $8 million facility would cater for Sailing, Triathlon and Ocean Kayaking. The area is also used for a myriad of other ocean sports including ocean swimming, kite surfing, surfboats and surfing.

The novel concept for the facility known as ‘The Bunker’ is that it will be located in a large excavation in the adjoining carpark digging a hole 36 metres long by 60 metres wide – which will be covered back to the existing land level and topped with a   ..  Details

The fifth day of competition started in the usual laid back Spanish style on the beautiful beaches of Costa Brava with plenty of time for gear tuning and tennis. This also gave the huge weekend crowds the opportunity to mingle with their windsurfing heroes and soak up the world tour atmosphere.

The UK’s queen of speed has now taken the top spot on the official International Speed Windsurfing Class ranking. Zara who only started Speed sailing in 2005 has slowly clawed her way up the ranking list by consistent performances at international events like the European Championships last year in Ireland.

It is a bitter sweet victory though as the upcoming World Championships at the legendary site of Sotovento has been cancelled due to the recession.
