The Meet the Team series introduces sailing fans to Bob Willis (Chicago, Ill.). Willis, 25, began his sailing career at the age of eight, and quickly advanced through Optimists and 420s. He soon became very serious about competitive windsurfing and at the 2008 Olympic Trials in Long Beach Calif., winning four out of 16 races. In 2011 he placed seventh at the Pan American Games. A member of Columbia Yacht Club, this is his first Olympic Games.

PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam day 6 and the world’s best freestylers took centre stage for their first day of competition. It wasn’t until just before five O’clock that they were unleashed onto the water, having spent the majority of the day on standby.

The final day of the slalom for the PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam appeared as though we would see another day of classic Fuerteventura conditions. However after an eleven O’clock start, which allowed three heats to be completed, the wind unexpectedly disappeared. On several occasions the wind did threaten to return but it was never for a prolonged period meaning that the sailors endured a frustrating day on standby with no more heats being completed.

PWA Fuerteventura Grand Slam day 4 finally delivered the kind of conditions that everyone has been waiting for, as the slalom sailors reached for their smallest boards and sails from 6.2m to 7.8m. The wind blew all day, which enabled three full eliminations to be completed.
