The Earth has once again reached the apex of its annual wobbling, which is to say that it’s ever so sunny and warm down below the planetary waistline, and oh so cold and dark above. That’s right, the Winter Solstice is upon us, and the holiday festivities abound for keeping us all… Well if not “Happy,” at least less sullen. Let’s face it: Winter’s gloom can be hard on the emotionally solar-powered, and many boaters are, dare we say, photophiles?
Some folks, on the other hand, thrive in colder-than-cold weather and long dark nights. They see Old Man Winter’s annual visit as an opportunity to bundle up, break out the big kid toys, and hit the slopes or the ice. In this case, as you can see, these hardy souls view a good hard freeze as an opportunity to raise sail, and perhaps raise a little Hell at the same time. After all, ice sailing is not for the faint of heart  … Details & Pictures
British yachtswoman, Hannah Jenner, has confirmed that her co-skipper for the double-handed, Class40, Global Ocean Race 2011-12 (GOR) is German sailor, Anna-Maria Renken. Jenner and Renken are currently the only all-girl GOR team.
Hannah Jenner secured her GOR entry in April this year and had originally planned to take advantage of the GOR’s Team Entry option and swap co-skippers at each stopover. ‘When putting together a global race campaign that relies on external funding, you really need a unique selling point,’ explains the 30 year-old, professional sailor. ‘I started with the idea of a team entry with the focus on taking young sailors with me, but, in the back of my mind, I also really liked the idea of entering as an all girl team,’ she continues. ‘It was just a question of finding the right girl!’  … Details
