With the modifcations made to the new foil on VESTAS Sailrocket 2 working so well in light winds, the team were keen to see if they would translate to high speeds. VSR2 had constantly been hitting a ‘glass ceiling’ around 52 knots despite the fact that she was designed to do well over 60. This is the day when theory turned into reality and the team got to see speeds they could only dare dream about when they started over 10 years earlier. Peak speed 61.92 knots, average over 500 meters 54.08 knots. This was the teams first sight of a new horizon. The peaks and the averages are expected to climb in the following runs.

A number of faces were tired this morning on day five of the Student Yachting World Cup. The Night Race from yesterday was definitively one of the hardest of this edition. That’s one of the reasons why only two races have been completed today, one windward-leeward and one coastal, going around Fort Boyard and near Oléron Island. The ranking at the beginning of the day was very close between Canada, Ireland, Euromed and Italy. With the bad weather forecast, this day of races could be the last one, which intensifies the stress for everybody!

The 2013 Red Bull Youth America’s Cup is set to take place from September 1st-4th and will open with Selection Series Trials in San Francisco in February.
