New AM-Cam video shot at Takapuna Beach on Friday March 8, 2013. Includes previous clips together with new video of the two AC72’s sailing back to their base on the Waitemata Harbour. In this new footage Luna Rossa starts well behind Emirates Team NZ’s AC72 and appears to be sailing higher and faster than the New Zealand Challenger which dominated the other racing on the day.
For the past few years, the America’s Cup has been better known for legal battles than as a sporting event, but that wasn’t the first time in its history that it degenerated into a power game between very wealthy people. Since Larry Ellison’s Oracle team won the cup, the defender and the challengers are in general agreement about the boats and the way the races will be run, but that doesn’t mean there have been no battles. Ellison has ambitious plans to turn the America’s Cup into a year-round commercial sport, and this has led to tough negotiations with San Francisco for the venue and with the TV companies for coverage.

US Sailing Rolex Award Ceremony 2013. At an emotional ceremony today at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, Johnny Heineken (Larkspur, Calif.) and Jennifer French (St. Petersburg, Fla.) were celebrated as US Sailing’s 2012 Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year. If you think sailing means sitting on a boat with one hand on the helm and another on a cocktail, meet Johnny Heineken.
You could call the Marin County native a daredevil for the way he can practically fly across the water on a kiteboard. As of Tuesday, you can also call him the 2012 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.
