A crew of sailors attempting to break the record for the fastest time from New York to San Francisco has reached Cape Horn after 21 days.  The record of 89 hours which stood for 130 years on the historic route has been broken many times since. The record that Maserati is trying to beat is the 1998 record that of Yves Parlier and Aquitaine Innovations set at 57 days and some hours.

The crew on board Maserati with Italian skipper Giovanni Soldini is a refreshingly international one although they are not your typical cruising sailors: Italians Guido Broggi, Corrado Rossignoli and Michele Sighel, Frenchman Sébastien Audigane, German Boris Herrmann, American Ryan Breymaier, Chinese Jianghe Teng and Spaniard Carlos Hernande   …  Pictures and more

Solo round the world yachtsman Alex Thomson performs a daring feat on board his high-speed yacht, HUGO BOSS: He climbs up the 30-meter high mast of the moving vessel and dives into the ocean.

8 tonnes of carbon fibre yacht, a 255 horsepower jet ski, 45 combined years of sailing experience, and one crazy guy in a suit.

Alex Thomson attempts what he calls ‘The Keel Walk’, a stunt that has become infamous throughout the world thanks to the iconic image of Alex ‘riding’ the keel of his 60ft yacht ‘HUGO BOSS’.

Few people in the sailing world are sharper than Paul Bieker, a soft-spoken Seattle-based naval architect who has spent his career designing a wide variety of sailing vessels, from super-quick I-14s and his one-off line of ‘Riptide’ racer/cruisers, to America’s Cup yachts.

Bieker is one of the core designers credited with ‘super-charging’ Oracle Team USA’s ‘USA 17’ last September, changes that helped the American-flagged international team to successfully pull-off one of sports history’s greatest comebacks to defend the 34th America’s Cup.

Students at Morristown-Beard School have taken the message in a bottle idea a step further, and 442 days later, it paid off.

Middle School students there learned about “Educational Passages” from Dick Baldwin of Maine, a program that teaches about oceanography, earth science and geography, according to sustainableguernsey.info.

Baldwin brought to them an unmanned sailboat weighing 36 lbs. and stretching five feet long, that the students would name, personalize and set adrift, the France-based blog said    …  More
