A cold but sunny day saw many of our fastest sailors converge on West Kirby to do battle on the GPS speed ladder.

Fastest of the day was again Farrell Oshea on his new Moo with a maximum speed of 45 knots and a 42.2 knot 5 times 10 second average.

The Volvo Ocean Race, an international sailing competition, has become an exciting subject of study for seventh and eighth grade students at Lawn Middle School. Team teachers Nick Alfred, math, Kristen DeSantis and Dawn Huff, language arts and reading, Jim Kaczynski, science, Maureen McGuirl, history, and Michaela Onosko, Spanish, combined resources to present a weeklong interdisciplinary learning unit focused on the race.

The team was first approached by the director of Sail Newport, Brad Read, whose brother Ken is participating in the race as skipper of the Puma racing team. He had a race-based curriculum already being used in two private schools in Newport and Lawn school teachers agreed to a utilize a modified racebased curriculum for Jamestown’s seventh and eighth graders. hokulea1After 10 days of patient waiting, the sea-starved crew of the Hokulea finally left Hawaii yesterday evening just before sunset. The voyaging canoe’s course is now set for the remote Palmyra Atoll, some 1,000 miles south of Hawaii in the Line Islands.

As previously reported here, Hokulea was originally scheduled to leave Friday, Feb. 27 from its dock at Oahu’s Sand Island. Cloudy weather, unpredictable winter winds and choppy ocean conditions kept pushing the date back. A window of clement weather finally opened up yesterday afternoon, prompting the crew to meet and make the decision to depart…  Details

The 2008-09 Adventure Series at Mystic Seaport continues with “Vietnam: By Land and By Sea,” a presentation given by writer, photographer and cruising sailor Bernadette Bernon Thursday, March 19 at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m.

Bernon is the former editor of Cruising World and co-author of Maiden Voyage, a book selected in 1998 by the American Library Association as one of the Best Books for Young Adults. In 2008, the author spent a month exploring Vietnam on land and then chartered a 38-foot sailboat and traced the country’s coast. Bernon will detail her sailing adventure and share her discoveries of Vietnam, its history and people….  Details
