Paul Larsen and his Vestas SailRocket team left Britain at the end of January for Walvis Bay Yacht Club in Namibia, to attempt to break the Outright World Speed Record.

On the 3rd of December 2008, Vestas Sailrocket set a new ‘B’ class world record of 47.36 knots over the 500 metre course. Unofficially, she is of the worlds fastest boat… but still 3.21 knots short of the Outright world record currently held by the kitesurfers.

People who love wooden boats held a bon voyage party Friday evening on the Sausalito waterfront for one of the rarest and largest wooden ships still afloat.

They were celebrating the at-long-last-finished restoration of the historic Frithjof Wiese, a 55-foot-long Norwegian gaff ketch constructed of 60 tons of Douglas fir and white oak.

In 1986, the owners of the massive old sailboat, originally used to rescue Norwegian fishermen in the North Sea, began a marathon effort to refurbish the 80-year-old vessel…  Details

One month into the longest leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, the Puma Ocean Racing team are preparing to face heinous conditions over the next four days, as they make their way towards Cape Horn. With 1,700 nautical miles to go until they round the iconic landmark, the Volvo Ocean Race fleet is about to be shaken up again, with the opportunity for place-changing at the front of the fleet. Puma is currently in third place behind rivals Ericsson 3 and Ericsson 4, but are closing the gap between the boats every mile that they sail.

Cape Horn, the southernmost tip of South America, is fabled for the hazardous conditions commonly encountered by boats rounding it. Where the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans meet, strong winds, large waves, strong currents, freezing temperatures and rough seas combined with the chance of iceberg sightings make its rounding threatening to the most experienced ocean going sailors.
