Hobie Alter had only one request: He wanted a traditional Hawaiian paddle-out ceremony after he died.
In the blue waters off Dana Point and surrounded by surfboards and sailboats, Alter’s family on Friday released bowls filled with soil brought from Hawaii, ocean water and sand from Waikiki beach, and rock salt, which represented the “purification of one’s soul, body and life,” said Eric Keawe, a “Kahu,” or Hawaiian priest.

“I was asked by Anthony Kotoun and Matt Knowles to shoot this event for 11th Hour Racing and Line Honors this past March in Key Largo, Florida. There wasn’t much breeze and out of the three days of planned racing we got in one days racing. But that one day was amazing! What a great boat to shoot. I used the Canon XF 300 mounted on a EasyRig with a Kenyon 8×8 gyro to keep the camera steady. For the aerials I used a Phantom One with a GoPro and next time will be using the new Sea Hex six engine waterproof drone! Cant wait to get that puppy airborne. We also used two GoPro cameras mounted on the boats and rigs and they picked up the action very well from their different vantage points. I am looking forward to the next event in Rhode Island!.
