Magnitude 80, Doug Baker’s Andrews 80, is about to pull to within 100 miles of Diamond Head and claim the Barn Door for the fastest elapsed time in the entire Transpac fleet.

There are a handful of boats within 200 miles of Hawaii and then the troops will start to march in. Sunday will be a light day for Aloha welcomes and the parties will go around the clock in Ala Wai on Monday and Tuesday.

Eyes are peeled to the Pegasus 50 blog where Philippe Kahn had demonstrated earlier today that you need very little other than a dry, fully charged iPhone with the FullPower MotionX application on it to navigate to Hawaii when he and Mark ‘Crusty’ Christiansen lost their battery power. With nothing more than enough juice to send messages via e-mail, the two-man boat is navigating through the darkness and squalls without electrical power. Says Kahn, ‘Bad. Safe, but bad.’ Relays Kahn, ‘All down – Down to flashlights, mechanical compass and add-on batteries for iPhone MotionX and hand held iridium. Trying to fix.’   …  Details

nevillecrichton_12bAlfa Romeo, the Australian-built super maxi owned and skippered by Kiwi yachtsman, Neville Crichton, has smashed the race record in the TransPac race by more than a day, arriving in Hawaii in the fastest time in the 103 year history of the event, further confirming Alfa Romeo as the yacht to beat in the 2009 Rolex Sydney Hobart race in December.

Alfa Romeo and Neville Crichton crossed the finish line just after midnight on Saturday 11 July Hawaii time, with an elapsed time of 5 days, 14 hours and 36 minutes, beating the previous race record by one day, one hour, 27 minutes and 51 seconds. Indeed, so quick was Alfa Romeo’s completion of the 2225 nautical mile race from Los Angeles to Hawaii, she came tantalisingly close to beating the multihull record – an amazing feat for a monohull…  Details

Neville Crichton’s Alfa Romeo is on track to break one record and keep us holding our breaths right down to the last second.

After knocking out couple of 400-nautical mile days since departing Los Angeles, Alfa Romeo’s pace slowed a bit on July 9th and she posted an awesome 391-nautical-mile day. The 0600 position report shows Alfa Romeo within 367 nautical miles of Hawaii and the 20-knot easterly winds and two to three meter seas stretch between her and her Diamond Head destination. She is less than a day away. Her ETA according to the 0600 position report is 04:17 am PDT, or 01:17 am HST. Everyone is routing for perfectly executed maneuvers from the 16-member crew.

Alfa Romeo, the 100-foot Reichel Pugh, owned by Neville Crichton, is poised to be the first boat ever to …  Details
