At half past seven in Le Bouveret, photographers and TV crew board the RIBs that will take them close to Alinghi 5, for her first taste of the sea, at Genoa, Italy.

Meanwhile the Super Puma helicopter is lifting the mast from its cradle. The mast has been rigged with a small sail and chute so it will fly in alignment with the helicopter. It soon disappears in the valley in direction to the Grand-Saint-Bernard pass which is at an altitude of close to 2500 meters, some 8200 feet. It took close to an hour to reach the pass; the Super Puma flew over the pass itself and soon started to descend towards Italy.

Just after 0830hrs the Russian Mil Mi-26T helicopter took off from Lausanne and then arrived over the lake to pick up the over 100 feet catamaran…  Details & Pictures

The simple measurement rules for the 33rd America’s cup have been published ahead of the New York Supreme Court hearing on 10 August to consider the Customs House Registry issue.

Societe Nautqiue de Geneve has defined a set of seven measurement rules for the Deed of Gift event.

In an accompanying letter, SNG officials state:

‘The purpose of the measurement will be to confirm that the dimensions of GGYC challenging vessel are the same as the dimensions certified by you, yourself as Commodore, in the Certificate of name, ownership, rig and specified dimensions, which was attached to your notice of challenge dated July 11, 2007…

…  At first blush the rules appear to be quite standard, however as with everything in this America’s cup there is a sting in the tail with the boats to be measured with crew aboard, to be in ‘load’ condition.

Normally waterlines are measured with all sailing gear aboard, and with the crew weighed separately, off the boat, if there is a weight restriction.

The rules sting could work against BMW Oracle Racing, at this stage, as they do not have a motor on their trimaran BOR90 to power winches, and instead carry an extra eight grinders – or close to a tonne of live weight…  Details

The announcement by Société Nautique de Genève that the 33rd America’s Cup, the Deed of Gift challenge between Alinghi and BMW Oracle, would be held in the tiny Emirate (Kingdom) of Ras Al-Khaimah struck many as odd, and sent sailing fans and journalists to their atlases to find the obscure little venue. As Alinghi 5 lifted off today for a helicopter ride to Italy, the questions on many’s minds were still surrounding this decision: Why would the Swiss choose to locate the race in the UAE? And of all the Emirates, why Ras Al-Khaimah?

Many of the Emirates have been working hard to host and promote international sporting events ranging from golf to motorsports, and the entire region has its collective eye on promoting yachting. With little oil, Ras Al-Khaimah’s infrastructure relies on …  Details & Pictures

Remember the Maltese Falcon? That 290-foot marvel of engineering and ego that technology titan Tom Perkins proudly paraded before the nation on “60 Minutes” with Leslie Stahl? It was the sailboat that launched a book, a pile of awards and YouTube videos with titles like “The Greatest Sailboat Ever.” …

Tom Perkins, the venture capitalist behind such companies as Google, Genentech, Amazon, and AOL, doesn’t do things halfway. When he collected vintage cars, for instance, he had the world’s largest …

Well, Mr. Perkins lost interest in sailing the boat not long after it was finished. He put it on the market for 99 million euros, or about $143 million. It didn’t sell.

So now, according to Luxist, Mr. Perkins has cut the price to 70 million euros, or $100 million. That amounts to a price cut of more than $40 million, making the boat a downright bargain. Perhaps we should rename the boat the …  Details

The Maltese Falcon finds a new owner

Tom Perkins, prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalist and ultra-millionaire, is close to finalizing the sale of his super yacht, the Maltese Falcon.

The reported price tag: 60 million pounds ($101,531,400), according to the British newspaper The Times. After nearly a year on the market, the price was trimmed from about $150 million, which is believed to be about what Perkins had paid for the boat.

“It has taken a while,” Perkins told The Times. “It is not the best time in the world to sell it. I can’t tell you anything at all about the buyer. There is confidentiality.”  …  Details
